Academic and Professional Projects
Professional Projects
Most of my current work is done for the Department of Anesthesia at Dalhousie University's Medical School. The public website is constrained by Dal's policies, and basically has to look more or less like the other Dalhousie sites. The bulk of my work is on the internal site, but that is a secure site for department members only, which makes it impossible to use that as a showcase for my work. Ah well.
Tamea Burd
I have recently helped my cousin Tamea fix up her site a bit; not so much changing the look of the site as bringing the code "up to code" as it were, as well as changing how the photo galleries work. She is a photographer, and has some really impressive samples of her work posted on the site. Since the makeover, she has moved up 7 pages in Google's rankings, though I'm not sure I can take all the credit for that!
Dr. Chisholm
I have also has the opportunity to do a couple of sites for Dr. Chisholm, who is one of the docs in my department here at the hospital. He is also involved in cosmetic and sweat management work, and wanted a couple of uncluttered sites to advertise those pursuits. These two sites, like my portfolio, follow a basic template I often use to get sites off the ground.
Academic Projects
These are several web sites or xml documents that I produced for assignments at the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Since many of these projects have their own menus and design, I have set them up to open in their own windows.
The M. C. Escher Digital Library Project
This project required the conversion of a book by M. C. Escher into a digital library (basically, a web site). The book itself is out of print, but please don't link to or re-publish the graphics. Do, on the other hand, take a chance to see some of the lesser-known works of this great artist.
XML Text Management Projects
These three projects were done for an Electronic Text Design class, and were designed to show some of the reasons that XML can be a useful data storage format. Basically, the excitement comes from being able to manipulate how (or what) data is displayed through XSL transformations, while the supporting data remains unchanged.

The Xanadu Project
This is an HTML essay about Project Xanadu, Ted Nelson's visionary (in the 1960s) view of how text might be manipulated by computers.
Bringing Resources to the Public
Steps In Planning and Implementing an On-Line Project
This website formed part of the content for a workshop delivered to librarians and library staff from across Nova Scotia.
Academic Papers
These are a few of the major papers from my Masters program. I feel that these are the ones most likely to provide information about topics employers might want to know about (or know that I know about), and which are not displayed as easily on a web page.
Information Literacy Instruction and Humanities Undergraduates - Are Current Models Appropriate for Scholarship in English Literature, is a rather long paper discussing the applicability of current information literacy models to arts (particularly literature) students. It includes an evaluation of five different online information literacy tutorials, as well as some recommendations for information literacy instructors who may be dealing with arts students.
Self-Assessment Report - Academic Literacy is a much shorter evaluation of my own Academic Literacy in-class tutorial. Aside from the evaluation, it also includes the exercises and evaluation forms I used in class.
Finally, Records Management Portfolio - School Of Information Management Website (2005-2006), co-written with Heather Ludlow, deals with a proposal for a comprehensive set of records management policies for the School of Information Management at Dalhousie. These policies include the creation of systematic archives, procedures for adding new records into the system, and a set of policies defining the areas and pages of the web site. Not thrilling, unless you're really into records management, but if you are ...
